How to crush self-doubt

I saw this quote about self-doubt that organizational psychologist Adam Grant recently posted:

“Doubting your abilities does not mean you have impostor syndrome. It is a natural response to a difficult or difficult task. The absence of doubt breeds arrogance. A sense of uncertainty maintains humility”

Now, he could be a polarizing guy but he has a point here. It is perfectly normal for us to question our own abilities.

Running a business is a challenge every day. If it were easy everyone would do it, right?

It takes courage to show up day in and day out, most of the time without a clue what you’re doing (what? You thought you were the only person who felt that way? You’re not!)

You secondly guess everything, start comparing yourself to others. This negative internal dialogue takes over. The wheels spin, panic sets in and that’s often when you make some not-so-great decisions that fuel this cycle of burnout.

These feelings of uncertainty don’t go away completely, you get better at managing them.

  • Focus on what’s real How do you feel about your thoughts or the truth? When my clients get freaked out and tell me “Work is terrible this quarter,” we stop and take a look at the reality. We run their numbers and see that things are not as bad as they feel, they are doing better than last quarter or better than this time last year. Look for the facts.
  • Create a notes file – And keep it where you can see it. This is where you store all the emails from satisfied customers or testimonials to remind you of the great service you provide.
  • Count on your cheerful team Surround yourself with good people who want the best for you and understand what it means to be in the trenches to build your business. Talking about your doubts with someone who understands them can make all the difference.
  • Look for predictability Stick to rituals and routines that calm and uplift you.
  • success tracking Monitor key metrics that are important in your business and aim to improve where you were yesterday, last month, last year. And celebrate your victory! This will boost your feelings of self-worth, even if it’s the little things – lots of small wins that get your business moving forward.

What do you do when you question yourself??
